How to Avoid Pinholes in an Epoxy Floor?

Applying an epoxy coating can sometimes lead to a recurring issue: pinholes (small air bubbles or micro-holes that appear on the surface of the floor). This phenomenon is often caused by overly porous, friable concrete or concrete that sands too easily. Fortunately, there is an effective method to eliminate this problem and achieve a smooth, flawless finish.

Why Do Pinholes Appear?

When concrete is too absorbent, it releases trapped air during the epoxy application, creating these small holes. Additionally, overly fragile or dusty concrete prevents proper adhesion of the epoxy, making it difficult to achieve a uniform finish.

The Effective Solution: Applying a Fast-Cure MVB

1️⃣ First Layer: Fast-Cure MVB (Moisture Vapor Barrier)

  • Apply a Fast-Cure MVB using a steel trowel at a 45° angle.

  • This technique forces the product deep into the concrete, reducing its porosity and limiting the release of trapped air.

  • Allow it to dry until it starts to harden but remains slightly tacky.

2️⃣ Second Layer: Regular MVB

  • Once the first layer is still tacky but not completely dry, apply a second layer of regular MVB.

  • This layer creates a uniform barrier, effectively sealing any remaining air within the concrete.

3️⃣ Finishing and Correction

  • After full drying, inspect the surface. If any pinholes remain, use a crack filler to fill them in.

  • A light sanding will ensure a perfectly smooth surface before applying the epoxy.

Why Does This Method Work?

Seals the concrete’s porosity before applying epoxy.

Significantly reduces pinholes and bubbles.

Improves adhesion and extends the longevity of the epoxy coating.

Ensures a smooth and professional finish.

If you're looking for a flawless epoxy application, this tested and proven technique is your best option!
